From Olympia to Sneaker Olympus: The History of the Nike Cortez
A Swoosh conquers the world: The release of the Nike Cortez is inextricably linked to the founding of Nike. Together with Philip Knight, Bill Bowerman founded the Blue Ribbon Sports brand in 1964. As a track and field coach at the University of Oregon, Bowerman's main goal was to develop a running shoe that could meet the demands of his athletes.
The focus: maximum durability and an optimal wearing comfort on long and short distances. The result of his ideas was a shoe with an upper mix of nylon textile and leather, combined with the best cushioning and a grooved sole in a herringbone pattern for the best grip - the Nike Cortez.
The first collection with the new sporty sneaker was ready to go - and so was Nike 's success: Bowerman and his co-founder Knight released the Nike Cortez right on time for the 1972 Summer Olympics, and the brand changed its name from Blue Ribbon Sports to Nike. Marketing at its best: The huge sporting event brought the new running shoe a lot of fame, which continues to this day: The Nike Cortez is now a popular casual shoe with impressive street style qualities.
