The Patagonia story: Sustainable outdoor clothing from the USA
As is so often the case, chance makes history: Canadian Yvon Chouinard is not only a true nature lover, but also an avid climber who scales one rock face after the next.
On a multi-day climbing trip in Yosemite National Park, Chouniard is let down by his climbing equipment - and he knows: with better climbing gear, this wouldn't have happened to him. That's why the then 19-year-old decides without further ado to manufacture his own climbing gear (later known as "Chouinard Equipment") - and with great success.
In the beginning, the Canadian still manufactured the carabiners, hooks and co. with his own forge and sold the parts from the trunk of his car. But soon the manual product manufacturing was no longer enough and he expanded - and how! By 1970, "Chouinard Equipment" was already the largest manufacturer of climbing hardware in the entire United States. No wonder, then, that Chouinard began selling clothing specifically for the outdoor segment just a few years later. The company was named Patagonia, after the South American mountainous region of Patagonia, which the founder had visited shortly before.
Yvon Chouinard built up his company with passion and ambition from the very beginning. What he never forgot, however, was his great love of nature. As a mountaineer, climber and surfer, he embodies outdoor sports through and through. A spirit that is also reflected in the company's philosophy. From its materials to its ecological footprint to its anti-growth strategy, Patagonia stands for the connection between people and nature. The brand is at the forefront of the market; true to the motto: what you buy today will shape the future of the entire industry.
Patagonia's philosophy: Don't Buy This Jacket
High-quality products that take a beating and last a long time - that's what Patagonia stands for. With this strategy, the company is going against the fast fashion trend and above all wants to do one thing: draw attention to environmental protection. Sustainability plays a central role for the American brand. In the production of outdoor clothing, Patagonia therefore relies on organic cotton and recyclable materials.
In 2011, Patagonia advertised with the slogan: "Don't Buy This Jacket." Sounds funny, but it has a very simple goal: People should rather repair, pass on or recycle their equipment instead of just buying something new in the store. And the strategy works. The advertising message in no way causes Patagonia's sales to slump - on the contrary: many people want to live and buy more consciously. The brand relies on transparency, and that goes down well.
Patagonia is all about getting there with the right attitude, and that's what makes the American brand a global player when it comes to environmental protection: for example, it produces its down jackets from feathers from geese that have demonstrably not been tortured or stuffed. And to convince even the last doubters: Patagonia is a co-founder of the One Percent for the Planet alliance and voluntarily donates 1% of its total sales to environmental organizations.
