Curated style by Kiko Kostadinov Studio and ASICS SportStyle development team. The UB10-S GEL-KAYANO™ 20 sneaker draws inspiration from the themes of Interlaced Assemblages, Functional Utopias, and Mino Ceramics.

The capsule continues to build upon the philosophy and design language seen throughout the partnership to date with some new concepts brough to the fore via materiality and colour honouring the heritage of ASICS’ past, whilst mapping the future of footwear

Soft textures are combined with the idea of handcrafted elements found in iconic artwork. By creating matte and washed colour appearances, the design team was able to enhance the heritage running shoe's archival shape and construction.

Contrasted with grid-like patterns and bold opaque colours, the Functional Utopia inspired variations apply direct correlations with nature. These glossy primary colourways are offset with metallic structures that accentuate the double-layer mesh materialisation.

The designers also explored Mino ceramics influences (the dominant style of ceramics in Japan) by investigating the contemporary processes of the rust-like qualities that appear in Mino glazes. This process looks to imagery as a vessel with degraded colours that have the ability to stand the test of time.

GEL

In 1986 Asics introduced GEL technology first on the Japan-exclusive Asics Freaks and then on the GT-II - and the rest is history. GEL technology works on both the rear and front of the foot by strategically placing the gel where it works best. Rearfoot GEL technology reduces impact at the heel and allows for a smooth roll-off, while in the forefoot it improves cushioning during forward movements. The GEL technology, formed from inert polymers to silicone, has been constantly developed to produce a substance that reduces the demands on the human body during sports.

About Asics

Whoever thinks of high-quality running shoes in the 21st century usually automatically has the ASICS brand in mind. But ASICS has not just been around since yesterday. The history of the brand begins as early as 1949, when 31-year-old salaryman Kihachiro Onitsuka was convinced that sports could make a positive contribution to the development of young people in his hometown of Kōbe. Based on this incentive, he founded the company ONITSUKA TIGER and began producing high-quality sneakers. Since 1977, the brand has borne the name ASICS. The name is an acronym and stands for the Latin proverb "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano" - in German: "A healthy mind in a healthy body". A proverb that still determines ASICS' corporate policy today. The development of the GEL cushioning system, which was launched in 1986 and still forms the basis for all new ASICS running shoes, has contributed significantly to the brand's success. In the sneaker scene, the most popular models are the GEL-Lyte III and the GEL-Saga. Designer Ronnie Fieg and the two stores Patta Amsterdam and Atmos Tokyo also immortalized themselves on these two silhouettes. The GEL-Kayano first appeared in 1993 and it perfectly reflects the style of the 90s & 2000s with its eye-catching details and chunky sole. Since its first release, the GEL-Kayano has undergone an annual facelift, so fans of the shoe can regularly look forward to new interpretations of the iconic silhouette. The work behind the new Kayano models takes place behind the doors of ASICS headquarters in Kōbe, home to one of the most advanced running research centers in the world.
