Gary Aspden is no stranger to sneaker culture. For many years, he worked behind the scenes, supporting Adidas-sponsored artists and projects. In 2014, he finally came to the fore and presented his new baby called Adidas SPZL. The kickoff was an exhibition in Manchester, where 600 pairs of vintage Adidas were presented. Although the shoes took center stage, it quickly became clear that there was more at stake here. Lovers from all over the world traveled to exchange ideas with like-minded people and celebrate the brand with the three stripes. Following on from the spirit of this exhibition, the first Adidas SPZL collection was launched in 2015. In addition to 80s running silhouettes and classics from the City series, Adidas SPZL is primarily dedicated to the Leisure range. Gary Aspden's declared aim here is also to design new shoes that authentically quote the Adidas archive, such as the Whitworth SPZL. A completely new upper was designed for this shoe, which is intended to imitate the look of a classic runner, but without the 3-Stripes. Instead, they focused more on other classic design aspects of old Adidas runners such as the toe overlays, heel clips, the color blocks in the midsole and the silver 3M print on the tongue, which was taken from the ZX 400. For the sole unit, Gary Aspden and his team opted for Quesence tooling and the Treziod heel clip after many prototypes.

About Adidas

Since its founding in the 1950s, adidas has stood above all for quality and innovative product design. So it's no wonder that the sporting goods manufacturer is the market leader in this segment together with Nike. The three stripes that adorn the adidas corporate logo are legendary, but the characteristic brand symbol also has a high recognition value.

The history of adidas began somewhat earlier and more contemplatively: with the brothers Adi and Rudolf Dassler, who fulfilled their dream of independence with the "Dassler Schuhfabrik". After they decided to go their separate ways following a successful collaboration, Adi Dassler founded the adidas company.

The name adidas can be derived from the name of the founder. His brother, on the other hand, founded the brand  Puma, which today also enjoys a high profile.

The global brand from Herzogenaurach has thus existed for almost 70 years. The further development of its own product range and maximum performance have always been the designers' main driving force in their work. In the meantime, adidas can look back on a product history that is second to none.
