From Training Camp to Campus: An adidas Origin Story
Form follows function. This applies to almost all adidas sneakers. Many of the most popular kicks were originally released as sports shoes. The same applies to the adidas Campus, which was released in 1972 as a low-top basketball shoe - at the time still under the name adidas Tournament. However, as high-tops soon became the standard on the court, adidas stopped selling the trainers shortly afterwards.
The 80s brought with them a new era of sneakers: silhouettes in a sporty style reached the subcultures and thus street style status. Adidas joined the movement and in 1987 brought out an updated version of the Tournament with a new title - the Campus was born. The colorways of these adidas Originals are characterized by white adidas stripes and a high-quality upper in clear colors such as navy, green or light blue.
The adidas Campus quickly became a sneaker milestone in street culture. The skater scene in particular appreciated the comfort of the stylish shoe, whose rubber outsole and reinforced toe box provided the necessary support. But the adidas Campus was also one of the hottest kicks in hip hop - and was immortalized as a pop culture icon on the cover of the Beastie Boys album "Check Your Head".
